Knighter wins ’06 GB Hare Scramble opener

D3-Racing KTM Enduro Factory Team rider David Knight continued his winning ways this passed weekend by securing victory at the opening round of the WOR Events organised ’06 Motul GB Hare Scramble series. Topping the Pro class ahead of Euan McConnell and Wayne Braybrook - the same two riders who joined him on the podium at The KTM Tough One back in January, Knighter collected the £1000 winner’s prize.

Third off the line David quickly moved up to the runner-up spot but saw his progress halted when his goggles became completely covered in mud. Having to almost stop to remove them Knighter spent much of the first lap catching back up to early leaders Braybrook and McConnell, eventually catching them as he neared the end of the first lap. Managing to pass both riders in quick succession David then pitted for clean goggles before opening up what would become a comfortable winning margin.

With the eight-mile course extremely muddy at the start of the race a hail and rain storm at the one-hour mark of the race resulted in the first round of the GB Hare Scramble series becoming an extremely difficult event. With conditions having worsened during the second hour of the race the decision was taken to shorten the race by one-hour on the grounds of safety.

David’s next event is the second round of the ’06 British Enduro Championship held on April 15-16.

David Knight: “It was a great event, despite the weather getting so bad. I didn’t get the best of starts, I think I was third off the line, but I was right behind McConnell and Braybrook who were out front. I managed to get passed Braybrook but as I tried to pass McConnell I dropped back to third. I got a massive piece of mud on my goggles, couldn’t see a thing, and had to almost stop as I took my goggles off. Because the track was fast and muddy it was really hard to see after that.

“I caught back up to Braybrook and McConnell and eventually passed them both before the end of the first lap. I stopped for some fresh goggles, which made things a lot easier for me. I was able to push on then and opened up a good lead on the second lap. It was just a case of trying to look after my bike then as well as keeping out of the worst of the mud.

“The hail storm made things difficult. There were riders everywhere on the course near the end of the race. It was great fun though. The track was great because it had a mixture of tight and faster sections. It made a nice change to being stuck in second gear the whole race.”
